Birding

Birding - bird watching

Our organic farm is located right next to the Vitsø nature reserve - a true paradise for bird watchers in Denmark. Surrounded by wet meadows, salt marshes and a picturesque lake, the farm offers a unique view of an extremely biodiverse area that is home to a variety of birds all year round. Both experienced birdwatchers and beginners will find exciting discoveries here.

Vitsø (the white lake)

The Vitsø nature reserve is an El Dorado for migratory birds, especially in spring and autumn. With a little luck, you will spot rare species such as the smew or avocet. The wet meadows and the lake are home to numerous breeding birds such as the pochard, lapwing and marsh harrier. A highlight is the white-tailed eagle, which can regularly be found in the region - an unforgettable moment for every bird lover.

Vitsø is ideal to explore from our farm. Hiking trails and viewpoints offer undisturbed observation, while a bird watching hut offers a particularly good view of the hustle and bustle. Immerse yourself in this peaceful natural world and enjoy the diversity of the birdlife.

Næbbet (the beak)

Another exciting area for bird watching is Næbbet on the northwest tip of Ærø. Næbbet is just a few kilometers from Økogard and can easily be combined with a visit to the Skjoldnæs Fyr lighthouse.

The many small ponds filled with water provide habitat for many species of birds. Large flocks of cormorants can be spotted here almost every day. But rare species such as the little tern also use the area to breed, feed and linger.
